PowerMate Support for PCs

How do I install the PowerMate in Windows 2000/XP?

1. Attach the PowerMate to a USB port and insert the enclosed CD. Double-click on setup.exe located at the root of the CD. If you have AutoPlay enabled, the setup program will run automatically when you insert the CD. Follow the instructions onscreen to install the PowerMate software. After restarting your PC, you should be ready to go.

If the automatic Windows installation appears to have not worked (i.e. - PowerMate will only move the screen cursor left and right and does nothing else), please continue to the manual installation at Step 2.

(Manual Installation)
2. Go to Settings > Control Panels > System, click on Hardware, and click on Device Manager. Check View devices by type. Under Human Interface Device, you will have a listing for the HID devices that Windows considers to be currently attached. One of these will be the PowerMate, and you can confirm that by double clicking on the device entry and verifying the listing Griffin PowerMate next to Location.

3. Once you've selected the correct entry for the PowerMate, click on Driver, Update Driver, and select Install from a list of specific location.

4. Select “Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click on Have Disk then click on Browse and point it to the location of the Griffin Technology PowerMate Driver folder (typically C:Program FilesGriffin TechnologyPowermateDriver). Select PowrMate.inf and click OK to install the driver. If this is a Windows XP installation, you should be done.

Additional Instructions for Windows 2000
If this is a Windows 2000 installation you must have Service Pack 3 applied, and then follow the instructions in Step 4. When you get to the step of selecting the PowrMate.inf file you will receive an error message stating, "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware" (or some similar wording). Click on "OK" to clear the error message, then try to load the PowrMate.inf - Again, exactly from the point you are at after closing the error message (which should be the file requester showing the PowrMate.inf file). Now the PowrMate.inf should load correctly. Follow the rest of the manual installation instructions to conclude the installation. You may be asked to reboot. At that point the Powermate driver should load at startup normally and operate correctly.

4. After all that, you deserve some fun. Twirl the knob and gaze in wonder as the light brightens and dims as you turn it right and left (this is the default behavior for controlling the system master volume).
